Habitat: Tolerates a wide range of habitats, from grassland to thicket and rocky outcrops, highly adaptable to different temperatures, from near the coast to higher altitudes in the mountains
Life form: Perennial succulent
Description: Stemless plant or with a stem up to 50 cm, growing solitary or in small clusters; 12-20 dark green, whitish spotted, 25-30 cm long leaves; brown, pungent toothed margins; 40-120 cm high, yellow, red or salmon-pink to orange coloured inflorescence with 3-7 branches. - Named Aloe maculata - in Latin "speckled" - referring to the whitish-spotted leaves. In the past also known as Aloe saponaria - meaning soap aloe - because its sap looks in water like sap lather. The seeds are reputedly poisonous.
